Equipping Single Mothers in Uganda with Life-Changing Skills

In an important stride toward achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of 2030, the Bannabikira Daughters of Mary Sisters have just completed their six-month job skills and financial literacy training program in Masaka, Uganda. Thanks to a generous grant from SRW, this initiative has equipped 46 single mothers and girls with the tools to build a more secure future for themselves and their families.

The program offered vital training in sewing and hairdressing, providing tangible skills that directly boost earning potential. Beyond vocational training, participants also received comprehensive instruction in financial literacy, life skills, and personal counseling from the Sisters. This holistic approach ensures that the graduates are prepared not just to find work, but to manage their finances, navigate life’s challenges, and thrive.

Upon graduation, the 46 women and girls received certificates from the Uganda Business and Technical Examination Board (UBTEB). The program’s impact is already visible: a new savings group, the Human Development and Social Inquiry Saving Association 2025, has been started by five of the graduates, and many more are developing new income-generating projects.

In a country where only 34% of rural women had a bank account in 2023, and access to education and vocational training for women is limited, the Sister’s program directly addresses critical barriers to financial independence. By providing knowledge, skills, and psychosocial support, the Bannabikira Sisters and SRW are helping these women become financially empowered, close the inequality gap, and create positive change in their communities.

Congratulations to all the graduates! We look forward to celebrating all their future successes!
