#386B – Opening of New Healthcare Facility for Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate, Gulu

Summary of the Situation

In November 2022, the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu opened a health facility in Lobodegi Parish to serve a community with no nearby medical care, where the closest hospital is 40 kilometers away, reachable only by poorly maintained roads and limited transport.

Initially renting a four-room house, the Sisters sought to combat the alarming rates of maternal and infant mortality, particularly among girls under 18. However, they quickly expanded their services to meet the community’s broader needs, necessitating a new, permanent facility. The lack of local health options has led to rising maternal and infant mortality rates, tragically affecting young girls during childbirth.

Today, their health facility provides a comprehensive range of services, including:

– Maternity and prenatal care
– Immunization and laboratory services
– Outpatient and inpatient clinics
– Minor surgeries
– Outreach programs and health education in nearby villages
– HIV/AIDS and TB testing
