SUMMARY OF THE SITUATION
Assam has experienced flooding in back-to-back months. The 1st spell was more due to uneven rain at the start of the monsoon; the 2nd spell was due to heavy rain in the upper catchment and rain in the lower catchment. Continuous and relentless rainfall has intensified the situation, leading to severe and sustained flooding throughout the district. Areas affected in Cachar districts are the villages nearer to the Bangladesh border, with water logging up to 10 feet, and the Barack River, with a heavy flow, is waiting to get out through sluice gates to Bangladesh. We witnessed the houses in the riverine filled with flood water; people left without drinking water, damages to the food grains and livestock ( chicken and goats), and they spent their nights in the makeshifts on the roadsides along with their cattle. The flooding has taken out the roads, so boats are the only way to travel.
FUNDS NEEDED
$70,000 US
HOW WILL FUNDS BE USED
1. Food (Dry ration ): Distributing pre-cooked food and dry ration
2. Clean water: chlorine tablets to purify the water.
3. Sanitary items and soap: These are needed to ensure family hygiene and will be effective against other infectious diseases within the targeted vulnerable communities.
4. Temporary Shelter and NF: Support for emergency shelter material, tarpaulin, is required to protect vulnerable groups from external extreme weather conditions. Since the electricity is unstable, people need torchlights with batteries to protect themselves from further danger at night, as snakes come up with the flood water.
EMERGENCY IMPACT
Our support will positively impact by addressing the immediate needs of WASH/Food/Shelter/tents and NFIs. The needs have arisen as the houses are damaged, and the affected population lives in makeshift tents, camps, schools, and government buildings. This response will provide immediate relief to the affected communities to support their lifesaving needs and cover the gap between the support provided by the state government and district administration and the needs of the affected communities. Meeting their emergency needs will give them a feeling of care and support as they feel victimized and help them withstand this life-threatening situation.
