#182 – Providing a security fence for the SJT Demonstration farm in Nyeri, Kenya

Summary of the Situation

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes run a demo farm at our formation house in Nyeri, located near Mt. Kenya. For the past two years, we’ve been piloting organic farming using the Permaculture method, and have successfully increased our crop yield and quality to meet most of our community’s needs. Our goal is to expand this initiative to sustain our community further by producing more crops for healthy consumption and surplus for sale. However, without proper security fencing, we face a significant challenge from wild animals who frequently damage our crops.

How will the funds be used?

The funds will be used to buy posts, wire mesh, and labor to put up a security fence for the 25-acre parcel of the sisters’ land.

The Sisters’ Response

Fencing the land would protect the crops from wildlife destruction, allowing them to mature and thrive. This would not only ensure a steady food supply for the community but also create a surplus for sale, helping to cover expenses and support the long-term sustainability of the Mission.

Systemic Impact

The increased yields of our harvest will result in improved financial returns, ensuring long-term sustainability of the farm and our community.
