Empowering Women, Human Trafficking
$80,000 Goal
Summary of the Situation
Thirty congregations of religious sisters came together to form a coalition to address human trafficking needs in the tristate area. In addition to legislation and education to prevent and address human trafficking of women and girls, they saw the need for a safe residence for the survivors.
How will the funds be used?
The funds will be used to repair the leaking windows and roof, as well as to upgrade the electrical and plumbing systems. These improvements are necessary to reopen the house.
The Sisters’s Response
The Sisters secured their first safe house in the Bronx. This safe house has been successfully transforming lives for over 15 years giving survivors a safe place to heal and rebuild their lives. The house was originally a convent that they expanded to take in the survivors of sex trafficking. It can host 10 survivors which includes residency, meals, counseling, job skills training, workshops and other needs that help them live and work independently. The survivors go through this immersive loving process for one year. Currently the house has been unable to take in survivors due to current maintenance needs and have a waiting list.
Systemic Impact
Survivors of human trafficking are traumatized and need support services to facilitate social emotional healing as well as employment training and opportunities. This is needed to begin their new life.
