#190 – Livelihood Enhancement Project in Mysore for marginalized

Summary of the Situation

Many women, especially widows, face financial instability, often due to cultural norms where men are primary earners. This forces them into low-paying or informal work, making it difficult to meet basic needs or invest in their children’s education.

To address this, we facilitate Self Help Groups (SHGs)—voluntary associations where women from similar backgrounds save money, access financial aid, and support each other. These groups empower women through training in financial management, vocational skills, entrepreneurship, leadership, health awareness, and human rights.

We operate in Mysore and Chamarajanagar, supporting 80 SHGs where women save collectively and provide low-interest loans for education, business, housing, and emergencies. Each group has a bank account and can access formal loans for economic growth.

Our efforts, led by Sr. Lovely and Mrs. Mary Cecelia, focus on creating sustainable income opportunities and advocating for women’s rights. Given the challenges of poverty in Mysore—including inadequate housing, healthcare, education, and job security—our work aims to improve living conditions and provide women with the tools for financial independence.

The Sisters’ Response

Addressing injustice for poor and marginalized women requires a comprehensive strategy focused on empowerment, equity, and sustainability.

Key Goals & Strategies:

  • Education Access: Scholarships, transportation support, and adult education programs.

  • Economic Empowerment: Microfinance initiatives, vocational training, and business development support.

  • Health & Well-being: Improving access to reproductive healthcare, mental health services, and preventive care.

  • Legal Rights Awareness: Workshops and partnerships with legal aid groups.

  • Community Support Networks: Facilitating women’s groups for resource sharing, advocacy, and mutual support.

  • Policy Advocacy: Influencing local and national policies for improved access to resources.

  • Sustainable Practices: Promoting eco-friendly businesses, sustainable agriculture, and resource conservation.

  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Continuously assessing and adapting programs based on participant feedback.

Through this holistic approach—covering education, economic empowerment, healthcare, legal rights, and advocacy—women gain the tools to thrive and uplift their communities.

Systemic Impact

The combined effects of social exclusion, limited access to essential services, and societal stigma have long diminished the quality of life for marginalized women. Our project addresses these challenges by increasing financial support, providing access to quality education for children, and ensuring a dignified place in society.

By reducing social discrimination and promoting acceptance, we foster community-wide economic growth and resilience. Empowering marginalized women has a ripple effect—uplifting families, strengthening communities, and inspiring broader societal change.
