Looking to Donate Your Stimulus Check? Here’s What to Consider

If you are one of the recipients of a stimulus check but don’t need to use it to help alleviate the financial strain of day-to-day living (i.e. rent, food), you might consider using that extra money to make a difference in the world.  After all, according to a recent NPR article, the stimulus money is meant to be spent, not saved.

Here are a few tips for how to donate your stimulus check to a good cause:

  1. Look for an organization or project that resonates with you and your family. With Sisters Rising Worldwide, you can choose projects based on areas of interest (i.e. domestic violence, human trafficking, job training) or geographic location. Click here to see all of our current open projects.
  2. Give to the moment, not in the moment. Look beyond what the organization is doing in light of a current crisis and see how the funds will be used beyond this one moment in time. For our Sisters, COVID is just one additional challenge on their plate—our funds are used to support their efforts before, during and after this pandemic.
  3. Consider giving globally. Many countries outside of the U.S. still have extreme poverty and even the smallest of financial donations will go a long way towards making a big difference.
  4. Know the real need. There are many great organizations doing great things, but you need to take the time to make sure your funds are being used to fix what truly is broken.  Sisters live in the communities which they serve, meaning they have a very good idea of what is really needed.  They prioritize the challenges and use our funds to tackle the most pressing issues—which is different for each and every community.
