In memory of Norbert R. Berg, a special fund has been established within Sisters Rising Worldwide (SRW), a 501c3 charity. All contributions to SRW in Norbert Berg’s name will be credited to a special recognition fund.
Contributions to the Norbert Berg Honorary Fund (NBHF) will pass through directly to Sisters Rising Worldwide. Norb Berg was an early supporter of Sister Irene O’Neill, CSJ, as she developed the vision and architecture behind Sisters Rising Worldwide, and he has continued in this mentoring role. SRW is a global movement of Sisters addressing the root causes of social injustices to create systemic change in the world. SRW provides an innovative technology platform to connect thousands of Sisters to each other and to resources, allowing them to better address critical key issues of injustice throughout the world. This includes a focus on health, education, well-being with all that entails, and ultimately, jobs so that all may flourish.
In his own career, Norb Berg was a visionary for revolutionary human resource programs that are now standard practice in many companies. As Vice Chairman of Control Data Corporation, he led a caring and successful culture for nearly 60,000 people. He pioneered employee assistance, work wellness, and flex time programs. He also led initiatives to build Control Data plants in impoverished areas, provide education and computer training for prison inmates, provide health care on Native American reservations, and make unserved restaurant leftovers available at food shelters.
The mission of Control Data Corporation was to address society’s major unmet needs as profitable business opportunities. Control Data Corporation not only revolutionized the mainframe computer market but also redefined human resources and its role in the lives of employees. Norb was key in instituting groundbreaking programs such as Employee Advisory Resource and StayWell, showing that Control Data cared for employees and that it was an integral part of the best business practices. Control Data’s human resource function also worked to do good in the community, working with inmates at prisons across the state, employees in poverty-stricken areas of the country, and at-risk children. Control Data worked to do what was best for its employees and the communities in which they lived and worked.
Sisters have been life-long companions to Norb and his family. Norb is steadfast in his support of Sisters Rising Worldwide. He likes to say, “Sisters are powerful women doing powerful work. Visit the SRW website, www.srw.org.
In addition to his successful career, Mr. Berg served in the U.S. military, was a loving husband to his wife Marilyn and their four sons, and championed countless other society-changing activities, all while keeping his faith at the forefront of his life. His support of Sisters Rising Worldwide is just one example. Contributions, both small and large, are welcomed at the Norbert R. Berg Fund.
