Summary of the Situation
The Annunciation Mission Dispensary, a faith-based health facility established in 2006 by the Daughters of Divine Love Sisters, relies on power supplied by Kenya Power Limited (KPLC), which is both expensive and unreliable. On average, the dispensary experiences power outages for about six hours each day, and without a backup power system, these disruptions create significant operational challenges. The frequent power interruptions severely affect the delivery of critical healthcare services, particularly in the maternity ward, where essential equipment like incubators, refrigerators, and other medical devices are at risk of malfunctioning, potentially leading to life-threatening situations for mothers and newborns. Power outages also hinder the dispensary’s ability to register and clerk patients, conduct laboratory tests, dispense medication, and store vaccines and reagents properly. Voltage fluctuations further damage sensitive medical equipment, increasing maintenance costs and shortening the lifespan of critical devices. Without a reliable power supply, the dispensary’s capacity to handle emergencies is compromised, placing the lives of expectant mothers, the poor, and vulnerable community members at great risk.

The Sisters’s Response
Annunciation Mission Dispensary partners with other like-minded health facilities, such as St. Francis Community Hospital Kasarani, to provide free medical camps for the community. In addition, the dispensary conducts medical outreach and home visits to serve those who have limited access to the facility. To ensure prompt care, the dispensary operates 24 hours a day, ready to respond to health emergencies at any time. On average, the facility provides 11,000 health services annually to community members.
Systemic Impact
The successful implementation will ensure a consistent and reliable energy supply, resulting in uninterrupted dispensary operations. Patient care and healthcare quality will improve due to fewer power outages. Energy costs will be reduced by 75%-95%, depending on system usage and sunny days. Savings will be reinvested into purchasing more medicines and upgrading the facility. Additionally, this initiative will help mitigate climate change by reducing reliance on fossil fuels, promoting greater.
