#174 – Sustainable Capacities for Conflict Resolution Among Youths and Young Adults

Summary of the Situation

In Naivasha, many youths and young adults are caught in conflicts as victims or perpetrators, often due to unemployment or underemployment. This frustration is evident in incidents like the June 2024 Gen Z protests, where some youths engaged in looting and violence, leading to loss of life. Political manipulation exacerbates tensions, especially during elections, causing ethnic divisions and fear of violence. Despite this, the Gen Z protests showed the potential for youths to unite across political and ethnic lines. Empowering them in conflict resolution can turn them into transformative leaders, addressing the region’s ongoing issues of violence, poverty, and unemployment. By providing platforms for youth involvement in peacebuilding, we can foster stability and socio-economic growth in Naivasha.

How will the funds be used?

The funds will be used to facilitate the training of 300 Youths and Young Adults, hire a training facility, provide lunch for the trainees, purchase training materials, and facilitate games festivals for peace and team-building activities.

The Sisters’s Response

ASN Upendo Village is dedicated to creating a global community of love that honors the life and dignity of every individual, particularly those impacted by HIV and AIDS in Naivasha. By training youths and young adults in peacebuilding and mediation, we aim to reduce conflicts and violence, which are often linked to risky behaviors like substance abuse and unsafe sexual practices. Through conflict resolution and empowering youth to support one another, we can create positive, supportive environments that help mitigate the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS.

Systemic Impact

Increased number of trained youth and young adult mediators -Strengthened conflict resolution and mediation skills -Reduced community conflict -Greater awareness of trauma and healing processes -Strengthened networks for conflict prevention -Enhanced understanding of peace issues -Positive, supportive environment for peacebuilding -Improved dialogue and cooperation among youth -Reduced risky behaviors, such as unsafe sexual practices, lowering the risk of HIV infection.
