Kenya
Empowering Women
$23,220 Goal
Summary of the Situation
In Githurai, Kenya, women—especially single mothers and widows—face extreme barriers to employment, even when they have the ability to succeed. Despite thousands of young people graduating each year, many remain unemployed and dependent on struggling families.
Women are often forced into poorly paid, exploitative jobs such as washing clothes, working construction, or worse—facing physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. With no stable income, no safe work environment, and no financial support, many are driven to desperation. Some even turn to sex work just to survive.
Sisters Response to the root cause of the injustice
The Sisters at Madonna Community Resource Center are creating a path out of poverty and exploitation. Their response includes:
1. Mentorship and business coaching for 40 women
2. Seed capital to launch small businesses
3. A safe workspace hub for product creation—bags, school uniforms, and more
4. Ongoing support through monitoring and evaluation to ensure success
This initiative supports economic independence and holistic transformation for the women and their families.
