Esther’s Transformation: Gaining Confidence Through Skills Training in Kenya

Esther had an uncertain future. Like many young women in her Kenyan village, she had finished school but faced the grim reality of gender inequality and a lack of employment. Her limited opportunities were an injustice the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) were determined to answer.

The Sisters’ vision was simple: equip local girls with skills to make them self-sufficient. And thanks to Sisters Rising Worldwide, their vision was realized. The IHM Sisters received a donor funded grant to purchase sewing and embroidery machines, materials, and provide hands-on skills training to girls in sewing, pattern making, and business management. With their new skills, the girls would be empowered to start their own businesses and improve their livelihoods.

When Esther enrolled, she felt both hope and fear, having no experience. Today, she has redefined her life.

“Before joining the Sisters’ sewing training, I had limited opportunities. I finished school but couldn’t pursue further education due to financial struggles,” Esther shares. “Today, I proudly cut, measure, and sew clothes for myself. I’ve even started making simple dresses and school uniforms for my neighbors, providing a small income that helps support my family and save for the future. More than just sewing, I’ve gained confidence and the courage to believe I can create a meaningful life.”

The Sisters’ impact went far beyond helping Esther. The investment in machines and training allowed the Sisters to launch their own economic engine. With their new embroidery machine, they recently secured an order for liturgical garments from newly ordained priests. The profit from this work covered materials and also helped purchase food and medical supplies for orphaned children under the Sisters’ care.

Thanks to our generous donors, this single grant has so far equipped 15 girls with trade skills, and impacted a total 350 people in the the Sisters’ community. It transformed an uncertain future into a powerful, self-sustaining stream of economic empowerment in Kenya.
