Restoring Safety and Trust at Immaculate Heart Hospital

When rising seasonal rainfall levels threatened the health and safety of patients at Immaculate Heart Hospital in Kereita, Sr. Lydia turned to Sisters Rising Worldwide for help. The hospital's existing drainage system could no longer handle the heavier rainfall, resulting in flooding that disrupted hospital services and increased infection risk among patients. Without help, Immaculate Heart, which serves 1600 people a month, would become unsafe, unsanitary, and inaccessible - especially for vulnerable patients.
Thanks to our generous donors, Sr. Lydia received funding to assess and redesign the drainage system to accommodate the increased seasonal rainfall volumes. Sustainable drainage solutions including underground pipes and surface runoff channels were installed, and landscaping adjustments were made to improve waterflow. With the improvements in place, health and safety at Immaculate Heart are restored. Flood-related service interruptions no longer occur, infection risks are lowered, and access has improved during heavy rains. Patients—particularly children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities—now receive care safely and with dignity.
“The project built community trust in the hospital and encouraged environmental responsibility,” Sr. Lydia shared. “Staff, patients, and visitors have all expressed relief and gratitude for the safer, cleaner, and more accessible hospital environment. Thank you to Sisters Rising Worldwide, and your generous donors, for restoring access to our hospital and improving the health of our community.”
